The U.S. Senate passed SRES 196 introduced by Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-DE) and co-sponsored by Sen. Jon Kyl (RAZ)
that supports the Iranian people in the aftermath of the June 12th election and also condemns censorship and
supports the Iranian people seeking access to news and other forms of information. (attached)
The Iranian American Lawyers Association (“IALA”) extends its gratitude and appreciation to all individuals who
participated and took part in this concentrated effort to call on their representatives since IALA called for an immediate
stop of the Human Rights violations of the peaceful protestors in Iran
The U.S. Senate passed SRES 196 introduced by Sen. Ted Kaufman (D-DE) and co-sponsored by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ)
that supports the Iranian people in the aftermath of the June 12th election and also condemns censorship and supports the
Iranian people seeking access to news and other forms of information.
In his opening remarks, Senator Kaufman referred to the fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of expression, which is
protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. In 1976, Iran was one of the first countries to
ratify this UN treaty, which also protects the right to hold opinions without interference, and the right to receive and
impart information in writing, print, or through any other media.
